Construction Resource Center
Practical introductions to planning a project, measuring quantities and reviewing estimates. These guides are educational, not engineering specifications.
Before you calculate
Confirm the drawing dimensions, use consistent units, distinguish gross from net areas, and record the assumptions behind every estimate.
Concrete and foundations
Calculate volume as length 脳 width 脳 depth using consistent units. Account for site conditions, reinforcement, formwork and waste separately. Structural sizing and concrete specifications must come from a qualified designer.
Masonry and plaster
Estimate wall area after accounting for openings. Brick/block quantities depend on actual unit dimensions and mortar joints; plaster quantities depend on coverage, coat thickness and substrate.
Flooring and finishes
Measure net floor or wall area, then add an appropriate allowance for cutting, breakage and layout. Check manufacturer coverage and pack sizes before purchase.
Roofing and waterproofing
Use actual sloped roof surface rather than plan area when appropriate. Include overlaps, penetrations, details and manufacturer-specific installation requirements.
Cost planning
Separate materials, labor, equipment, transport, permits, taxes and contingency. Compare estimates with current local supplier quotations.
